Kitchen Remodel Ideas for Oak Park Homes
Most Oak Park homes date from the late 1960s through the 1990s, and their kitchens tend to be well-sized but closed off, with soffits, short upper cabinets and a peninsula facing the family room. These five changes come up again and again in our Oak Park projects.
1. Open the kitchen to the family room. Removing the wall or half-wall between the kitchen and family room is the single most requested change. It brings light from the back of the house into the kitchen and turns two average rooms into one good one. If the wall is load-bearing, a flush beam keeps the ceiling clean.
2. Replace the peninsula with an island. Peninsulas were standard in Oak Park tract plans. An island gives you seating on one side, prep space on the other, and a better path from the garage door to the refrigerator. Many Oak Park kitchens have room for an island of eight feet or more once the peninsula is gone.
3. Take cabinets to the ceiling and remove the soffit. The dropped soffit above the upper cabinets is wasted space. Removing it and running cabinets to the ceiling adds storage and makes a standard-height kitchen feel taller. Glass-front uppers on the top row keep it from feeling heavy.
4. Rework the lighting. A single center fixture is common in these homes. A proper plan combines recessed lighting over work areas, pendants over the island and under-cabinet lighting along the counters, all on separate switches.
5. Use a durable, light floor throughout. Running one flooring material from the kitchen through the family room and hall reinforces the open layout. Wide-plank engineered oak and large-format porcelain are the two we install most.
Permits in Oak Park. Because Oak Park is unincorporated, permits go through Ventura County's Building & Safety division rather than a city office. Structural changes like removing a wall need engineering and a permit; we handle both.
See it before you build it. Every Oak Park project starts in our showroom, about 10 minutes away in Thousand Oaks, where you can see cabinet lines, slabs and finishes and review 3D renderings of your kitchen before anything is ordered.
